║ Intel Matched Memory Overview ║
║ ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
FEATURES AND BENEFITS - MEMORY MODULES
Intel has carefully engineered, manufactured, and tested these memory
modules for compatibility with the IBM, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, and
Zenith computers which have 72-pin SIMM sockets on the motherboard.
Matched Memory(TM) modules are available in 1MB, 2MB, 4MB, and 8MB
versions.
Intel has priced Matched Memory modules very competitively and put
considerable care into the quality of these products. For instance, we
use
■ Fast page mode DRAM (provides reliable, faster access)
■ Capacitors under every chip (protects data from power
fluctuations)
■ Resistors to set the Presence Detect Bits (ensures proper
recognition by PS/2 computers)
MATCHED MEMORY MODULE Q&A
WHAT IS A 72-PIN SIMM? ARE THESE INDUSTRY STANDARD?
A 72-pin memory module is designed to provide 32-bit memory for i386-
and i486-based computers. IBM began to use them with the Micro Channel
PS/2s and now many other vendors have followed suit. The advantage of
72-pin SIMMs is that each SIMM provides 32-bits of storage while it
takes four 30-pin SIMMs to do the same job. When people speak of
industry standard SIMMs, they are generally referring to 30-pin SIMMs.
WHAT KIND OF DRAM DO YOU USE?
All Matched Memory modules use 70ns or 80ns, fast page mode DRAM. The
memory modules designed for the IBM PS/2 Models 90 & 95 use 70ns DRAMs,
all others are rated at 80ns.
Even though the DRAM are rated at 70ns or 80ns, in most IBM PS/2
systems Intel Matched Memory Modules will be operating at 85ns. This is
part of specification for the PS/2 architecture for most IBM PS/2
systems.
DO THESE FIT ON INTEL ABOVE BOARDS?
No. Our Micro Channel memory boards use industry standard, 30-pin
SIMMs.
DOES INTEL MAKE MATCHED MEMORY FOR THE IBM MODELS 90 & 95?
Yes. There are 2Meg, 4Meg, and 8Meg Memory Modules available (PCSM
1290, PCSM 1490, and PCSM 1890 respectively).
DO MATCHED MEMORY MODULES WORK ON IBM 2-8MB & 2-14 MB BOARDS?
Do Matched Memory Modules work on IBM 2-8MB & 2-14MB Boards?
Yes. The Matched Memory Modules have been fully tested in IBM's
boards. However, if you're adding a memory card to a PS/2, don't
forget Intel has Micro Channel Above Boards that come with a full five-
year warranty.
WHY SHOULD I BUY INTEL MATCHED MEMORY MODULES?
Intel offers a very high quality product, excellent customer support
and a five-year warranty at an extremely competitive price.
